🫀 Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)

What is Atrial Fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation — often called AFib — is the most common type of irregular heart rhythm. It occurs when the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) beat out of sync with the lower chambers, leading to a fast or uneven heartbeat that may come and go or become persistent over time.

AFib affects more than 350,000 Canadians and becomes more common with age, particularly after 65. Many people are unaware they have AFib until it is discovered during a routine examination or after a complication such as a stroke. Because AFib increases the risk of stroke and heart failure, early diagnosis and proper management are essential.
